Every football pool format, compared
Five real formats, five very different seasons. Here's how each one plays, who it's for, and the honest weekly effort it asks of your group.
Straight Up — the universal donor
Pick the winner of every game; every correct pick is a point. Nothing to learn, nothing to explain, and the crowd percentages on each game give even casual players something to lean on. Best for mixed groups and first-year pools. Weekly effort: five minutes.
Against the Spread — for groups who watch the games
Every game carries a point spread; your pick has to cover, not just win. Blowouts matter, underdogs are interesting, and a 12-4 week actually means something. The detail that keeps it fair: every pick grades on the closing line — the same number for everyone, no matter when they picked. Best for football-fluent groups. Weekly effort: ten thoughtful minutes.
Survivor — maximum drama, minimum effort
One team a week to win outright, each team usable once, last one standing wins. It's the format non-fans can't stop checking, because elimination is permanent and public. Add strikes (1–10) so one upset Sunday doesn't kill half the office. Best for big groups and offices. Weekly effort: one agonizing pick.
Confidence — the thinking player's pool
Pick every game AND rank every pick; correct picks pay their rank. The most strategic weekly decision of any format — and the most brutal to run on paper, which is why it's best hosted. Best for competitive groups who like arguing about orderings. Weekly effort: fifteen minutes of real thought.
Pick X of Y — conviction over volume
Pick a fixed number of games from the slate — your five best, not all sixteen. Optional rigid scoring turns each week into a perfect-week showdown: the card only counts if every pick wins, and standings rank weeks won first. Best for groups that want stakes without homework. Weekly effort: five minutes, all conviction.
Picking for your group
Office with casual fans: Straight Up or Survivor-with-strikes. Fantasy-refugee friend group: Against the Spread or Confidence. Group chat that can't commit: Pick X of Y. Can't decide? Run Survivor alongside anything — it stacks with every other format because it's one pick a week.
