What the spreadsheet actually costs
Nobody counts the commissioner's hours: collecting picks by text and email, chasing the three people who always forget, typing spreads on Thursday, entering scores on Sunday night, grading, updating standings, and answering 'wait, why did I lose that one?' on Monday. Call it 90 minutes a week, every week, for eighteen weeks — a full work week per season, donated.
And the spreadsheet has structural problems no formula fixes: picks aren't hidden from a nosy commissioner, deadline enforcement is the honor system, and one mistyped score silently corrupts the standings until someone audits it.
What a hosted pool changes
Every mechanical job disappears: lines post themselves, picks lock at kickoff, games grade automatically the moment they end, and the standings re-rank live. Picks stay sealed until games start — including from the commissioner. The rules that cause arguments (pushes, postponements, tiebreakers, which line counts) are published settings, not judgment calls.

Six friends, straight-up picks, one season, a commissioner who genuinely enjoys the bookkeeping — keep the spreadsheet. It works.
